If you have been curious about dermaplaning but are not quite sure what it involves, whether it is right for your skin, or what to expect, this is for you.
It is one of my most popular treatments at Jacalyn James Skin Clinic. And once clients try it, most wonder why they waited so long.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a precise manual exfoliation technique.
It uses a sterile surgical blade to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin.
It sounds more dramatic than it is. In practice, it is a controlled, painless treatment that takes around 30 minutes and delivers immediately visible results with no downtime whatsoever.

The Benefits of Dermaplaning
The results go beyond simply smoother skin. Although that alone is worth it.
Immediate skin benefits
- Instantly smoother, brighter skin with a noticeably refined texture
- A natural, luminous glow that no amount of highlighter can replicate
- Reduced appearance of fine lines and surface congestion
- A flawless base for makeup, which glides on effortlessly after treatment
Longer-term skin benefits
- Significantly improved product absorption
- Your skincare penetrates deeper and works harder once the barrier of dead skin cells is removed
- Cleaner, clearer, more refined skin from the removal of peach fuzz, which traps oils, dirt, and product residue on the surface

Common Questions About Dermaplaning
Will the hair grow back thicker or darker?
This is by far the most common concern. The answer is a clear no.
Dermaplaning only targets vellus hair. This is the fine, soft, colourless hair that covers the face. It is physiologically impossible for this type of hair to grow back coarser or darker.
The hair will return exactly as it was, at the same texture and colour as before.
Is dermaplaning suitable for everyone?
Dermaplaning works well for most skin types. It is particularly effective for:
- Dry, dull, or congested skin
- Anyone wanting to improve how well their skincare routine performs
- Skin that lacks radiance or feels rough to the touch
However, it is not recommended for skin with active acne or breakouts. The treatment can spread bacteria and potentially worsen inflammation in these cases.
If you are unsure whether dermaplaning is right for your skin, I will always advise you honestly during your consultation. And if it is not the right fit, I will suggest what is.
How often should dermaplaning be done?
I recommend dermaplaning every four weeks.
This aligns with the skin’s natural cell renewal cycle and allows the skin to complete its normal rejuvenation process before the next session.
Treating too frequently can cause mild surface sensitivity. This is easily avoided by simply respecting the four-week interval.
What to Expect After Treatment
One of the things clients love most about dermaplaning is that there is genuinely no downtime. You can return to your normal routine immediately.
Things to be aware of after treatment
- The skin may feel slightly more sensitive to sun exposure in the days following treatment
- SPF is non-negotiable post-treatment, though it should be a daily habit regardless
- Occasionally, some mild surface flaking can occur if treatments are booked too close together, which is another reason the four-week interval matters
